Meet the Artist

Dani McDermott, Artist

Tied between two states, art is the way I connect my lives. Born in rural Nebraska, I spent my childhood scrawling with crayons and markers. I come from a family of creatives and have always had a natural inclination to the arts. That love carried over with me as I left the Midwest to live in western Pennsylvania at 13 years old. Shortly after, I began to take an interest in photography!

I was enrolled in a Graphic Design program through my county’s vocational school by the time I was 15. During my two years there, my passion for traditional media grew while I learned the digital side of the arts. Drawing from life comes naturally to me—I’ve been creating people, flowers, trees, and houses for as long as I can remember.  As I furthered my education, I improved as a photographer. This provided a personal library of reference images to use for my artwork.

My freshman year of college had me rethinking whether Graphic Design was the right career for me. All of my art felt forced and not an authentic reflection of my creativity, so I stepped back from that major. I transferred to another university to study English Literature in my second year of undergrad—fall of 2022. Unable to find housing, living off campus meant I needed to find a job to support myself. The only place I applied to was an art museum. Even in a creative block, I still gravitated towards art.

After experiencing burnout between working weekends and attending school full-time, I dropped out in the spring of 2023. Museums became my life after I accepted my job offer. It was perfect—my days will be spent surrounded by paintings! While that was my dream as a 19-year-old, the novelty wore off with time. I knew I needed another purpose.  Two springs later, April of 2025, I picked up my oil pastels again at 21 and haven’t set them down since. My artwork being framed is now the dream!
